CHAPTER SIX
ADAM came before they closed. Susan was just going home as he came into the gallery and Kirsty was in her flat, gathering the clothes she would need for the next few days. It was difficult being in two places at once and she constantly had the problem of bringing clothes back to her flat and taking things to the hall.
'A visitor,' Susan called up. 'I'll see you tomorrow, Kirsty.' She just heard Susan say, 'She's up in her flat,' and then the door closed.
Kirsty had assumed that it was Karen, who sometimes popped in for a coffee and a chat, but as she heard very masculine steps on the stairs she dropped what she was doing and went to see who had arrived.
Adam was already up the stairs and in the living-room, and for a second Kirsty felt a great flood of alarm. All she could think about was the size of that bill, and his misdemeanours never entered her head at that moment. She just stared at him anxiously and he looked back unswervingly, saying nothing.
'I'm going,' she managed at last, and he nodded, still without speaking.
'Er—what was it?' she continued, and he reached forward, dropping a cheque on the table, the amount a little horrifying, too worrying to speak of, in fact. Kirsty just dared not take a close look, and no thought about where he had been came into her mind. Her own faults were occupying her to the exclusion of anything else at that moment, because she had done almost everything at his flat without permission. And it was not as if she was close to Adam any more; he had left the restaurant in a rage the last time she had seen him.
'It's a lot,' she ventured uneasily, and he began to smile, a slow, warm smile, the sort of smile she hadn't seen for years.
'You made it beautiful. The cost is immaterial. It was almost too beautiful to leave, but I thought I might just catch you before you went home.' He looked at her seriously. 'Thank you, Kirsty.'
'I enjoyed doing it,' Kirsty murmured, feeling very thankful that he was not enraged by her unauthorised actions. 'I might even take that sort of thing up—expand into it,' she added, with an attempt at bravado.
'I hope not. I want to go on thinking that you did it just for me.' He smiled into her eyes. 'I even considered staying there tonight. I could still pick up traces of your perfume as I walked in. The whole thing was astonishing. I never expected it.'
'Did you get to Paris?' Kirsty asked quickly, worried by his dark voice, and he walked forward slowly, until he was looking down at her.
'I got back to Portugal. It's where I was heading, if you recall.'
'I wasn't really listening.' She turned away but he caught her shoulder, spinning her to face him.
'So you never actually stopped worshipping, even though the idol fell?' he enquired softly, and Kirsty looked quickly away, managing a slight laugh.
